In Space (Poem)

they say in space no one can hear you scream
or cry
or laugh, in one blinding moment of irrational transcendant delight

before your eyes crystallise and freeze
and your lungs
seeking air, finding none

fold up
and the pinpricked sky
so full of sharp white stars
goes dark

and the only sound in all that emptiness
the sound of your own heart beating in your ears
like a drum calling out to the gods

stutters
and falls silent
